outdoor furniture refresh with woodard

outdoor furniture refresh with woodard

Seven years ago we moved into our current home. As a young family we weren’t entirely sure how we would use the house, but did know we would be using the pool as soon as the weather warmed! I wanted quality outdoor furniture that would stand up to high usage with little care. With three young children and plans to entertaining often it needed to function and be easy to care for. I purchased my outdoor furniture from a family run company called Casual Image. They felt Woodard Furniture was exactly what I needed. I loved the transitional look of the Andover Collection. We purchased pieces for our fireplace sitting area and master balcony. Casual Image convinced me Woodard was a high quality brand and not only would it last and need little care – it would be ridiculously comfortable!

Truth be told I was worried about wear and tear of outdoor cushions. I felt confident the framing would hold up at least a few years, but I didn’t think the cushions were a smart choice. But the Woodard patio furniture was so darn comfortable I had to try it for the sitting areas in our home where I knew adults would lounge fireside and my husband and I would drink our coffee everyday. I crossed my fingers and purchased it.

This furniture has been outside 365 days a year for seven years. It has never been brought inside nor covered. Not the cushions, not the throw pillows, not the framing. Nothing. This Woodard furniture has been put to the test. It’s seen snowy winters, wine spills, pollen, raspberries smashed into it and has been soaked in sunscreen. Despite all of that it still looks beautiful!

updating our Woodard Furniture

We have been doing some recent indoor updates with new furniture that looks more upscale and clean now that our children are getting older. I felt like the furniture was do for a color transition. While it still sits just as comfortably as the day we bought it, I was ready for a “look change.” I partnered with Woodard Furniture to give our furniture a refresh. It’s amazing what new cushions will do!

Originally my plan was to buy new black aluminum frames instead of the brown we had. But after looking at my Woodard pieces I saw zero reason to do that. It’s in impeccable shape! I decided to update the cushions only and re-evaluate the framing after getting them done. Wow! I glad I did not touch the framing! We saved so much money and the look is fabulous! The new fabric colors completely changed the tones of the existing brown framing and made them look deeper and richer. Changing the outdoor cushions alone completely refreshed the entire outdoor patio look. So many people have commented that the entire thing looks like brand new furniture!

outdoor cushion fabric

Our home has both stone siding and gray cedar shingles. It’s a mixture of traditional southern charm and Cape Cod. My personal feeling is that the yellow fabric worked great to pull out the warmth of the stone. But this time I wanted to pull out the gray cedar and make our white columns, black wrought iron and shutters pop.

Each cushion was done by Woodard using their exclusive fabric line of Sunbrella fabric. I chose the Pique Gravel as the primary. It didn’t skew too purple or too cool. I laid it outside by the cedar for days looking at it in all variations of sunlight to make sure the tones stayed true to work with the cedar coloring. It’s also so soft!

To add a custom look, a contrast welt was added in Sailcloth Salt. The entire effect is very Hamptons-esque and clean and fresh!

Throw pillows were added from Serenea & Lily. These add a beautiful layer to bring out the blue of the fabric.

The indoor/outdoor rug in both ares are from Frontgate. I plan on changing the balcony rug to a gray rug from Serena & Lily but it hasn’t arrived yet. The fireplace rug will stay the same.

I keep it minimal outside. We have a lemon tree, a lantern and places to set a drink or light a candle. The focus should be on the comfort and the view.

fireplace area

For the fireplace area I really wanted a love seat and two chairs. It felt like the right mix of pieces for adults to cozy up to the fire with. The love seat is also a glider – and is phenomenally comfy!  The Rocking Lounge chair does what it says – rocks! A ridiculously comfortable spot that adults find themselves in around 3pm when the sun is lowering, their kids are swimming and getting tired out and the glasses of wine start flowing!

the pieces I own

Everything is from the Andover Collection. Each piece is made of a rust proof aluminum – so that your outdoor furniture can last for years! The style includes a striking ‘X’ detail throughout the collection.

how I clean my Woodard Furniture

I keep a spray bottle outside with a mix of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. When I see markings of any kind I spray it and let the sun do it’s thing. It will take every stain away.

Once a year we lightly pressure wash it with the same mix of solution. You don’t need hard pressure – the fabric is meant to be bleached. The color will not fade or be harmed! I spray even dark blue throw pillows and they still look great!

Let the sun work with the bleach for a few hours and then either let a rainstorm come rinse them for you (ha!) or take a hose to them. Set them out to dry and that’s it!

For my aluminum I use Rejunivate which is a standard cleaner you can find at any hardware store. I really only do this once a year after pollen season ends. The rest of the year a quick rinsing off with a hose does just fine!

We are looking at the Woodard Cortland swivel lounge chairs. I ordered one to see how it feels and looks. I need to order 4 more for a table and I was told by one of the patio stores in San Diego that they quit carriyng Woodard because people were complaining about the quality. I don’t know what the problem was for previous customers but I am worried about spending the money on these chairs if the mechanics of the chair is something that might not hold up. This is a lot of money to us so I want to make sure. Do you have any ideas on this since you have partnered with them.

I’m so sorry, Bonnie. This response got lost in the shuffle! Did you end up buying the Cortland Lounge Chairs? I respectfully disagree with the patio store — I think their quality is impeccable. It’s some of the most well made, comfortable outdoor furniture I own. I have another line of furniture outside that I hate (though people tout it’s high quality) but it’s less expensive AND less comfortable. I plan on replacing it with Woodard as soon as I can. Let me know what you ended up doing – curious to hear!
